The Ontario government has dedicated Highway 664 as the Leo Bernier Memorial Highway.

The 17-km stretch between Hudson and the junction of Highway 72, near Sioux Lookout, will be named after the late Kenora MPP and Minister of Northern Affairs.

Born in Hudson and known as the 'King of the North,' Bernier was a businessman before entering politics and won re-election many times.

He was a powerful cabinet minister and a strong voice for the North during the 1970s and 1980s.

Bernier died in June, 2010.

“Leo Bernier was a great man with a great vision for Northern Ontario,” said Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP Michael Gravelle in a July 31 statement. “He left an impressive legacy and set a high standard for those of us who had the privilege of following him. I couldn't be more proud to be part of a tribute that will permanently honour his many contributions and his life.”

“This highway dedication is a fitting tribute to Mr. Bernier, who made significant contributions to the health, welfare and prosperity of Northern Ontario during his many years of public service,” added transportation minister Bob Chiarelli.
