Kenora's stalled Tunnel Island project was given a $1-million lift by federal Minister of State Gary Goodyear.
His ministry is funding a heritage development project, known locally as Common Ground, involving the City of Kenora, Grand Council Treaty No. 3, and researchers at the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba.
Goodyear made the announcement in Kenora May 19. The grant money will be spread out over six years.
The former Abitibi land is a future centre piece for the waterfront redevelopment plan.
Through a Community-University Research Alliances grant, the investment will support university researchers and students in partnership with community-based organizations.
