Northern Iron has received a dewatering permit for its Griffith open-pit mine in northwestern Ontario.
The Vancouver miner reported that the Ministry of Environment has issued a permit to dewater the North Pit to a maximum depth of 25 metres.
The permit is valid until Aug. 13, 2013.
Company president Basil Botha said receiving the permit is “excellent news” and enables their exploration crews to drill from the pit's upper benches.
“The North Pit phase two application to dewater the remainder of the pit is currently under review by the ministry and in conjunction with this application, a number of the baseline studies have commenced and are progressing extremely well.”
The company has five iron ore properties containing more than 500 million tonnes of historical resources near Ear Falls in the Red Lake mining district, including the past producing Griffith pit.
Northern Iron wants to eventually make hot briquetted iron for the steel industry.
Dillion Consulting has been engaged to complete the project. DST Consulting Engineers will be completing the baseline studies.
