Northwestern Energy Association (NEA), a co-operative of six power distribution companies in northwestern Ontario, has expressed interest in bidding on energy plants put on the market by Ontario Power Generation (OPG). NEA companies, which include Thunder Bay Hydro, are owned wholly or in part by municipalities under the Energy Act. OPG has made moves towards decontrolling three of their Northern Ontario power plants, in Thunder Bay, Atikokan and Sault Ste. Marie. According to new deregulation rules set out by the province, OPG must divest itself of 4,000 megawatts of power from these three price-setting power plants. The Ontario market is supposed to open in May 2002.
