Nearly half of Sault Ste. Marie's $1.3 million in supplementary budget items have been dedicated to economic development.

City council recently approved an economic development fund of $658,000 - more than $100,000 above the amount in last year's budget and $158,000 more than the amount proposed when budget deliberations began.

The city's growth mandate steering committee was established in February following a council session designed to focus on prioritizing issues for growth. It will prepare recommendations for the money, although specific projects will not be identified. Instead, the recommendations will suggest how city hall can work to make the community more business-friendly.
