An increase in the number of building permits issued this year compared to last year's figures is a positive sign for the future of the City of Timmins, a city official says.

This year's building permits, valued at $10.5 million, are up $3.6 million from last year's total.

Year-to-date totals for 2001 show 465 building permits have been issued in the city, which is only a slight increase of 51 permits over last year. The largest increase is in the institutional sector, generating $2.8 million this year compared to $557,133 last year, the majority of which has been in the area of additions and renovations.
