The second quarter finished on the upswing, but it was not good enough to overtake housing starts numbers from 2000, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. in Thunder Bay reports.

The 24 single-detached starts in June represent 11 more than the 13 starts in June 2000, but the number is still 14 units below the 10-year average for the month of June. The 24 units brought the year-to-date total to an even 50 singles. This, combined with four row units and two semi-detached units brings the total to 56 units, two less than the 58 total starts to June 30, 2000.

CMHC has now changed its overall forecast for the year, predicting 250 starts in 2001, comprised of 140 single-detached starts and 110 multiple units.
