Montreal-based AbitibiBowater is changing its name to Resolute Forest Products, effective Nov. 7.

President and CEO Richard Garneau said the name change better reflects the new characteristics of the restructured forest products giant, namely “our determination, strength and resolve to be a profitable, sustainable organization.”

Last April, a rename-the-company contest was held among employees. A selection committee and senior executives chose Resolute Forest Products from 1,400 submissions.

In French, the company will be known as Produits forestiers Résolu.

AbitibiBowater said while the company will be doing business under the new name, as a legal entity the company needs shareholder approval. That will take place at its 2012 annual general meeting.

The company said it will be “business as usual” with respect to invoicing, payments, contracts, company stock and stock market listings.

AbitibiBowater has Ontario-based pulp and paper, and sawmill operations in Thunder Bay, Fort Frances and Iroquois Falls.
