After considerable debate on the possibility of once again digging through the historic Hollinger mine property in Timmins, Goldcorp Inc. has announced its decision to seek to open three open pit mines on the site.

Despite concerns that the move would cut into local neighborhoods, officials have said the proposed mining activity will take place hundreds of metres away and that there are no plans to obtain local businesses or homes.

To create a buffer for much of the resulting noise and stray dust, a 20-metre-high berm will be established around the perimeter.

The open pits, which have entered into the permitting stage, are expected to have a five-year mine life.
