Project coordinator of the new Red Lake Heritage Centre was thrilled with

the donations received from Goldcorp and Rob McEwen, chairman and CEO of

Goldcorp.

"Goldcorp told us all along that they would support this project, but we

did not know the amount of the contribution until now," Michele Alderton,

project co-ordinator of the heritage centre says.

A contribution of $250,000 from Goldcorp was matched by a personal donation

from Rob McEwen.

"I am very happy to support this project," McEwen says.

"The centre will create an invaluable cultural and educational legacy for

the community. Red Lake has many stories of national significance to tell-

records and economic artistic and social achievements and the heritage

centre will provide an accessible, comfortable and attractive venue that

will preserve and promote the heritage of the area for present the future

generations."

Alderton says the donations will allow the team to concentrate on designing

exhibits and developing educational programs for school children.

Red Lake Heritage Centre is a $3.1-million cultural facility that shares

partnerships with Red Lake Museum, the Municipality of Red Lake, Ontario

Parks, the Red Lake District Publicity Board, the Northern Chiefs Council,

the Indian Friendship Centre and local educators. The centre will house a

regional museum, interpretive exhibits on Woodland Caribou Park, a

multi-purpose gallery, a tourist information centre, a regional archives

room and a gift shop. The 8,000-square foot facility with 4,000 allocated

for exhibit space, has to date, received $1.090,000 million in funding.

Grant applications are currently being reviewed by Northern Ontario

Heritage Fund and FedNor.
