Armando Plastino, a former CEO of Essar Steel Algoma, has been named to the board of directors for Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie.

“We’re delighted to have Armando Plastino join the Algoma University board,” chair Tim Lavoie said in a news release. “He will certainly bring a lot of helpful experience to our board table and we’re honoured to have such a prominent member of the local community join our team.”

Plastino, who worked for Algoma Steel for 39 years, retired as CEO in December 2010. He has served as chief operating officer and vice-president of operations, in addition to sitting on the board of directors. He is currently a director and member of the audit committee at Rockex Mining Corporation.

"I am looking forward to joining the Algoma University Board and am eager to learn more about the business of the University," Plastino said in the release.

University president Dr. Richard Myers indicated that the appointment reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to remain relevant to the local community.

“As the university develops its programming and research activities in science, technology and business, it’s essential to have good relations with leaders from the private sector,” Myers said in the release. “Essar is a major global company. As the former CEO of Essar Steel Algoma, Armando Plastino is uniquely positioned to help us move forward in these critical sectors.”
