Northern Ontario forestry mill closures and job losses are coming fast and furious.
Domtar is temporarily shutting down its Nairn sawmill, affecting 20 employees for four weeks, starting Feb. 23, and its Val D'Or, Quebec sawmill for six weeks, while one shift will be cut at its Ear Falls sawmill. In all, it affects 113 employees.
The company recently posted a $676 million fourth quarter loss.
Tembec is closing sawmills in Mattawa and Spruce Falls in the northeastern Ontario and laying off 119 workers.
It follows on the heels of the Tembec's and Krueger's joint decision to close the insolvent Marathon Pulp in northwestern Ontario and throw 200 people out of work. That mill permanently closes Feb. 28
NDP MPP Gilles Bisson chastised the McGuinty Liberal government for doing nothing while Northern Ontario job losses mount,
"This is a complete abdication of responsibility and a lack of leadership, plain and simple."
