A Manitoulin Island fish company is blaming the Ministry of Natural Resources for the loss of 40 jobs in Little Current and likely more over the next few years in transferring jobs to their other operations on the East Coast. Coldwater Fisheries says the MNR is dragging its heels in approving an application to expand their aquaculture operations with fish cages in the LaCloche Channel. The ministry replies that commenting federal and provincial agencies advise that no further development be considered until negotiations conclude with the local First Nations communities over traditional fishing grounds. As well, the process to obtain a licence might take up to two years in collecting water quality data.
