A cranberry food processing plant located on the Wahta Mohawk First Nation

has received $100,000 from the provincial government to assist in the

$650,000 project to construct a 3,250-square foot processing plant.

"This initiative will help facilitate the construction of a new plant to

expand the production of the region's cranberries, in turn creating

important jobs for individuals and especially youth in this community,"

Norm Miller, MPP Parry Sound-Muskoka says.

Since 1967, the Mohawk First Nation has been growing cranberries and they

are the largest producers in the province. A new facility will enable

production to grow to more than 2,000 pounds of sweetened dried cranberries

per week. In addition, the plant has the capacity to store 24,000 pounds.

Jim Wilson, chair of Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation says, "The

new cranberry plant will strengthen the foundation for growth job creation

and prosperity in the community."
