Ontario First Nations will be the recipient of $65 million in federal money to repair or build new homes.
Federal Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl announced March 16 the government is committing $400 million over the next two years to improve national housing conditions in First Nation communities as part a trend toward market-based housing on reserves.
The funds are earmarked for new social housing projects and fixing up old stock. The government said it will complement existing housing programs offered through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and, Indian and Northern Affairs.
It is promised to present a great economic boost for many First Nation communities by generating employment, developing skilled trades and creating small businesses.
Union of Ontario Indians Grand Council Chief John Beaucage said this investment, along with the recent establishment of the First Nations Market Housing Fund, ensures market-based and social housing "are being addressed in a meaningful way."
He said the Anishninabek-Canada Protocol Table in working with the government has been a "breakthrough" in addressing First Nation concerns.
