Federals to fast track innovation and technologies for mining

Federal Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt promises to fast-track funding for mineral mapping, innovation and green technologies for Canada's mining industry.

Federal Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt promises to fast-track funding for mineral mapping, innovation and green technologies for Canada's mining industry.
She made the remarks at Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum's (CIM) annual conference in Toronto, May 11.
A series of government initiatives include $22 million to $30 million this year for the Geo-mapping for Energy and Minerals (GEM) program launched in 2008 to map Canada's North and southern region.
About $250,000 in funding is earmarked for research, innovation and commercialization opportunities through the Canadian Mining Innovation Council.
Ottawa is launching a Green Mining Initiative to support the development and demonstrate green technologies and processes to improve the industry's environmental performance.
And the CIM will host a Corporate Social Responsibility Centre of Excellence to ensure that Canadian mining companies are world leaders in their field.
“Working together, we are reinforcing the foundation for long-term success and helping to build a mining industry that can compete economically, environmentally and socially with...anywhere in the world,” said Raitt in a new release.
