The federal Minister of Industry Tony Clement met with mayors from four of Northern Ontario's five biggest cities to discuss new initiatives in the 2009 Conservative government's budget.

Entitled "Canada's Economic Action Plan," the budget also doubles as a national stimulus package and suggests nearly $40 billion in spending.
To an audience consisting of Sudbury's John Rodriguez, North Bay's Vic Fedeli, Timmins' Tom Laughren and John Rowswell of Sault Ste. Marie, Clement laid out some of the new initiatives meant to assist communities.

In particular, Clement highlighted the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund which will provide $4 billion for provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure rehabilitation projects.
He also pointed to the Community Adjustment Fund initiative as being potentially beneficial to Northern Ontario, which provides $1 billion over two years to help mitigate the short-term impacts of restructuring in communities.
