FedNor has announced a funding package of $1,281,700 in support of small business development and growth, and economic development in Sudbury.
“The government of Canada is committed to making strategic investments that support the development, growth and diversification of Northern Ontario’s economy,” said FedNor Minister Tony Clement in a news release. “Today’s announcement will support vital infrastructure enhancements at the Greater Sudbury Airport, create youth employment opportunities for the region, and provide local businesses with access to the resources they need to be successful.”
The biggest chunk of funding, $750,000, goes to the Greater Sudbury Airport industrial park to extend an access road and provide municipal services to vacant land, designed to help attract private investment, enable business expansion and industrial land development.
A further $276,700 will go to Sudbury's Regional Business Centre for a series of workshops, a Business Community Outreach Program, and assisting entrepreneurs with business planning and financing requirements to help them access capital.
Cinefest Sudbury will receive $200,000 for marketing activities, an arts resource centre and point-of-sale centres, which will result in enhanced awareness for the festival, increased ticket sales, and greater tourism opportunities for the region.
Finally, $27,500 each will go to the Municipality of St. Charles and the Mattagami First Nation for youth internships, who will assist with economic development initiatives, research and strategic planning, and marketing and technology-based activities.
Sudbury Mayor Marianne Matichuk said the funding will help create jobs and assist with short- and long-term business development and growth opportunities.
Funding was provided through FedNort's Northern Ontario Development Program, which support projects that strengthen community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
