February is cruel month for northwest forestry workers

Newsprint and kraft production at AbitibiBowater's Thunder Bay operation is stopping for close to a month, laying off 700 workers at the two operations.
High electricity costs and a lack of orders are being blamed. Newsprint production stops Feb. 1-March 2 with kraft production stopping Feb. 4-25.
About 400 woodland workers begin a three-week layoff Feb. 9.
It comes more than month after the operation closed for four weeks to clear inventory.
East of Thunder Bay, 130 employees in Longlac are permanently leaving Longlac Wood Industries as new owner Norboard Inc. shifts some workers and plywood production to Cochrane.
