Should final bulk test samples of an anorthosite deposit near Foleyet prove positive, a production plant could be built within a year. Southern Africa Minerals Corp., a junior mining company, announced in late August its intention to acquire property 34 kilometres southwest of the village for a proposed quarry site. Anorthosite is used in glass, ceramics and filler applications as well as a fine abrasive in soap and toothpaste. It is believed the site contains a potential 800,000-tonne deposit, a supply lasting 40 years. A major glass company has already expressed interest in buying the processed material. Plans call for a $2.5-million production plant processing 20,000 tonnes a year. The actual mining would be contracted out, but the operation would create six jobs at startup.
