Inco Ltd. has been fined $650,000 by an Ontario court in relation to the death of an employee at its Sudbury Copper Cliff South Mine in April 1999. The employee was killed when placing a blasting charge underground at the mine. At the conclusion of an eight-day trial in late June, Judge Louise Serre found the company guilty on two counts under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The judge determined the company failed to ensure that the firing cables, the wires of an explosive device, were disconnected from the power source until people had been cleared from the work area. Inco also failed to take reasonable precaution of maintaining clear radio communications to clear workers from the blasting area. An Inco supervisor was found guilty of health and safety violations under the act and fined $8,000 each on two counts.
