The opening a new nickel mine in Montcalm Township by Falconbridge Ltd. could create 200 jobs by next year. Advanced exploration is underway at a site 70 kilometres west of Timmins, with the potential of bringing a mine into production in late 2002. Estimates present a seven-year mine life. The Montcalm ore would be milled and concentrated at the Kidd metallurgical division with the concentrate processed at Sudbury's Falconbridge Strathcona smelter. It is believed there are other small nickel deposits in the area, but transportation costs of moving ore to the nearest smelter render them uneconomical.
