Communications technology is expanding in the Cochrane-Timiskaming district to pave the way for increased economic development. A recent FedNor contribution of $500,000 to the Northeastern Ontario Communications Network will enable the implementation of an "intelligent" switching system for the two districts. The technology, called Common Channel Signalling #7 (CCS7) is a telephone network signalling system that separates signalling information from user data. The call centre industry has now mandated CCS7 as a necessary service. Residents will also enjoy enhanced 911 service and name and number display services through this technology.
