Domtar workers with the Communications, Paper and Energy Union of Canada in Espanola will set a strike vote next week over issues surrounding wages, pensions and benefits.
Talks between the company and the Wm. H. Burnell Local #74 were held May 30 to June 3, but failed to come to resolution. The conciliator has been asked to file a no-board report to encourage conciliation between the two parties.
The union will meet next Thursday, June 16 to vote on whether or not to set a strike date.
The news comes following an announcement that Domtar Corporation was named one of the top three 50 best corporate citizens in Canada by Corporate Knights, an independent Canadian media company that publishes the world's largest circulation magazine focusing on corporate responsibility.
The list, announced June 8, considers factors such as environmental, social and governance indicators, as well as how well the companies manage their carbon, energy, water usage and waste production.
“We are not just a paper company,” Domtar president and CEO John D. Williams said in a news release. “We believe that our ongoing association with major, respected environmental organizations an dour sincere efforts in the domain of sustainability were key factors for our inclusion among the top three corporate citizens in Canada.”
“We look forward to continuing these award-winning efforts and we will continue to raise the bar as a leader when it comes to sustainability in the pulp and paper industry,” Williams added.
