Delay election call for forestry's sake, says Boshcoff

Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP Ken Boshcoff says it's "irresponsible" for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to call an election before the recommendations of a national forestry report are implemented.

Thunder Bay-Rainy River MP Ken Boshcoff says it's "irresponsible" for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to call an election before the recommendations of a national forestry report are implemented.

The report entitled 'Opportunities and Challenges Facing Canada's Forest Industry' was passed by the House of Commons in June.

It contains recommendations to help the embattled industry by extending capital cost allowances, making tax credits refundable, developing intermodal transportation strategies, investing in research, increasing the use of bioenergy, expanding overseas markets and using forestry benefits to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

"It took three years of hard work to get everyone to agree on this course of action, but it finally succeeded," said Boshcoff in a Sept. 3 statement. "I am very pleased with the input myself and witnesses from northwestern Ontario had in the process to ensure that the final recommendations will benefit our region and Canadian forest producers."
