Vale Inco’s Copper Cliff North Mine has been recognized as the safest metal mine in Canada for the third year in a row.
Copper Cliff North Mine, located in the City of Greater Sudbury, was awarded the national John T. Ryan Trophy for excellence in safety at the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum’s 111th annual Conference and Exhibition in Toronto on May 11.
With more than fours years without a disabling injury, North Mine had the lowest lost-time accident rate of any metal mine in Canada in 2008.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of each and every one of us that works here,” said Fred Stanford, president of Vale Inco’s Ontario operations, in a media release. “Our people at North Mine have done an exceptional job looking out for themselves and for each other. They have, once again, set a new standard of safety excellence in our industry – a standard that others will strive to meet and all of us in the industry will be safer for it.”
It marks the fifth consecutive year a Vale Inco mine has been named the safest in Canada, with Garson Mine, also in Sudbury, and Birchtree Mine in Thompson, Man. winning in 2005 and 2004 respectively.
