Construction association gears up to lobby government

Thunder Bay is experiencing a slow building year thanks to an unfriendly construction environment.

Thunder Bay is experiencing a slow building year thanks to an unfriendly construction environment.

Officials with the Construction Association of Thunder Bay say the city's problem is twofold: the construction environment needs to change; and the government needs to spend more money in support of it.

The construction scene in Thunder Bay is typical of the rest of the country, which is for the most part depressed. The government is being blamed for not providing enough money for infrastructure development.

The government collects $5 billion in gas taxes per year, but puts only five per cent of that back into road repair, a spokesperson for the Canadian Construction Association (CCA) alleges. An overall concern about the direction of the economy makes people wary of building.

The CCA wants to change things by meeting with construction industry representatives across Canada and collecting information for a report that will be used to lobby MPs and MPPs.
