The unveiling of a colourful billboard on Feb. 6 in the City of Greater Sudbury marked the launch of a $22-million capital redevelopment program at a Sudbury-based seniors' residence. The project is a large component of the seniors' campus being spearheaded by the City of Greater Sudbury, along with a number of community partners.

The seniors' campus initiative is intended to enhance the availability of services for seniors in the city and will involve the expertise of various northern partners, including the Alzheimer Society, universities and colleges, the local hospital, northern health and long-term care partners and the Northeast Mental Health Centre.

"The capital redevelopment project will take us one giant step closer to realizing our dream of developing a comprehensive seniors campus in this community," says Ted Callaghan, city councillor. "The seniors campus is the first of its kind in Northern Ontario. It's an accomplishment we can all be very proud of."

With the capital redevelopment project, a new wing will be added to the front of Pioneer Manor seniors' residence, increasing the total number of beds at the centre and upgrading the facility to meet ministry requirements.

Of the $22 million cost, $13 million will come from the city and $9 million from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The project is slated for completion in the summer of 2003.
