Sault Ste. Marie is reporting an increase in conventions and groups meeting in the city last year.
Groups serviced by the city's economic development corporation in 2000 list over 4,000 more delegates coming into the city than in 1999.
Officials with the EDC attribute the increase to the city's successful bid and hosting of the Ontario Winter Games held in March of 2000. The increase in delegates resulted in a greater direct economic spend of close to $2 million over the previous year.
This year, the city hosted the Ontario Special Olympics, which drew over 1,000 athletes, companions, coaches and officials, and city officials anticipate 2001 figures will come close to those seen in 2000.
Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, a division of the EDC, has identified conventions, meeting and sport-tournament group business as a top priority for the next few years.
