City aims to buy out waterfront leaseholders (08/01)

The City of Thunder Bay is aiming at buying out leaseholders in Chippewa Park in order to convert the park to a public recreational site.

The City of Thunder Bay is aiming at buying out leaseholders in Chippewa Park in order to convert the park to a public recreational site. The existing lease for Sandy Beach residents in Chippewa Park is up for renewal and leaseholders have been told they would have to notify the city by Sept. 14 if they planned to sign the new five-year lease. Last year's appraisal of properties in Chippewa Park will result in an increase of annual rental fees for residents along the waterfront. Residents will also be required to purchase $2 million worth of liability insurance because they are renting from the city. There are 67 leaseholders at Sandy Beach.

City officials say the intention is to eventually integrate the Sandy Beach property into the Chippewa Park plan, a plan to expand the use of the waterfront property.
