Cellular phone service to remote areas east and west of Thunder Bay will be introduced over the next few years, thanks to a $4-million grant from the provincial government.
The Municipality of Greenstone will take the biggest piece of the pie. It will receive $2.5 million to extend cellular service to area towns including Nakina, Hornepayne, Caramat and Manitouwadge.
Greenstone is working in conjunction with Thunder Bay's Superior Wireless, which is in the process of completing a $7.9-million cellular phone project between Nipigon and Hearst.
The $2.5-million grant, courtesy of the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, will be used to establish new towers and make use of existing ones.
The City of Kenora and Kenora Municipal Telephone System received $1.5 million as part of the same announcement. The money will be used to extend cell service in a corridor that includes Kenora, Nester Falls, Sioux Narrows and areas east of Dryden.
