The second quarter of 2010 saw $10.1 billion worth of investment across the nation's non-residential building construction, up 1.2 per cent over the previous quarter, according to Statistics Canada.

This quarterly increase is the first since the kick-off of the economic downturn in the fourth quarter of 2008, when the value of investment sat 7.7 per cent higher than this most recent quarter.

This increase was spurred by spending on commercial and industrial buildings, while institutional investments declined following 12 straight months of increases.

Ontario and Quebec featured the largest increases, while British Columbia and Alberta marked the largest declines.

Investments in Ontario's commercial construction increased 4.5 per cent to $2.2 billion.
