The Canadian Wood Council wants more Ontario wood in the framing of mid-rise buildings.
Armed with $50,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, the council's Ontario Wood WORKS! Program is studying new technology and wood products that can be used to construct buildings from five to eight storeys high. The project includes partnering with private developers to construct a prototype building.
Under current provincial building standards, wood products can be used as the main structural system in the construction of buildings with four storeys or less.
The Ontario Wood WORKS! program is based in North Bay and promotes the use of wood in all types of construction by working with designers, engineers and contractors on projects.
