An agreement to exempt Canada from the United States' Buy American policies may be close to being a done deal, according to reports by CBC News.
Citing government sources, the news agency's website reports the American government will look to use its discretionary power to enact the exemption "very soon." In exchange, American companies would be able to have guaranteed access to procurement contracts at the provincial and municipal levels.
The policy, which emphasizes the use of American-made products and materials in public works projects, has generated no end of controversy. Many Canadian companies, including Temiskaming Shores' Wabi Iron and Steel Corporation, have openly decried the policy as being protectionist.
