With its Sept. 26 gala fundraising dinner cancelled due to the federal election commitments of its key speaker, Justin Trudeau, Cambrian College is instead hosting a conference on greener buildings.

From Oct. 23-25, Cambrian's eDome will play host to the Living Building Conference and Trade Show, which will focus on "living building retrofits." Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about technologies to help introduce sustainability into modern building and renovation practices.

Various figures from the areas of green building practices and energy conservation are expected to present, with the keynote speaker being local entrepreneur Tom Fortin.

Fortin will offer a case study of an off-grid residence, and will discuss the challenges and rewards involved in trying to produce all of the home's electricity needs. This includes a breadth of issues ranging from generation and storage to usage and system integration.

As with the nixed gala dinner, a portion of the proceeds of the conference will be used to help Cambrian's Energy Systems Technology students to finance a research and training excursion to Europe in 2009.
