Oakville's Bot Construction has been awarded a $62-million contract for a second major expansion along Highway 11-17 between Thunder Bay and Nipigon.
A 14-kilometre section between Mackenzie Station Road to Birch Beach Road will be expanded to four lanes. Work begins immediately, with completion expected in 2013.
“With the award of a second major expansion contract, the dream of a four-lane highway between Thunder Bay and Nipigon is being realized bringing with it significant economic benefits for northwestern Ontario,” said Michael Gravelle, minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry.
The project is expected to create as many as 400 construction jobs.
Other expansion projects nearby including a 6-kilometre stretch east of Thunder Bay between Hodder Avenue-Copenhagen Road to east of Highway 527. It includes the construction of two bridges across the Mackenzie River.
