Residents, industry and government representatives had the opportunity to hear about BacTech Mining Corporation's proposed plans for a bioleach plant in the Cobalt at a town-hall meeting held at the Haileybury School of Mines.
More than 50 people sat in a presentation made by BacTech President Ross Orr on the plant, which would process the arsenic-laden silver tailings in the area using proprietary bioleaching technology.
Environmental studies designed to support permitting at the Castle Mine tailings will begin shortly.
In June, the company expects to begin drilling and sampling tailings from the Castle Mine site, located 50 kilometres west of Cobalt . This will provide additional information on the grade and consistency of the tailings, and additional material for metallurgical, bioleach and environmental test work.
Agreements have already been reached between BacTech and the Haileybury School of Mines to develop a bioleaching technician's course to be offered at the school in the fall of 2009.
