Employees of the North Bay mining company, Atlas Copco, returned to work today after taking last week off. The break was part of an agreement between the union and company to prevent cut backs and layoffs.
“This was an agreement with all employees, which I believe is a good way of doing things,” said Jeff Hagar, Atlas Copco general manager. “I see this as a positive, the company and union working together to come up with a plan.”
This plan came after three rounds of layoffs affected 50 employees. Ernie Giroux, president of Local 2412 International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers has said employees have been asked to take their holidays before the end of August and there have been talks about a shutdown in the summer. www.atlascopco.ca
