Construction has started on the first phase of Nipissing University's active learning and physical health research innovation centre in North Bay.
The planned 85,000-square-foot facility is a $32-million, three-phase project which involves expanding the current Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre and providing space for physical activity as well as a multi-purpose space for large-venue activities.
The next two phases involve expansion to the Schulich School of Education's Bachelor of Physical Health and Education program.
The construction phases will be funded by a combination of debt, reserves, user fees, partner contributions, government agencies and fundraising activities.
“The expansion will also allow us to accommodate larger groups of participants and spectators for national and regional competitions, conferences and community events, bringing more people to Nipissing and North Bay,” said Vicky Paine-Mantha, vice-president of finance and administration, in a statement.
