A land-improvement project has been initiated for the East Sudbury-West Nipissing area to support diversification of the cash crop industry and expansion of agriculture-related industries in the area. The province recently granted $274,698 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund for a project that will involve the installation of perforated tile in over 1,000 acres of drained clay and loam clay soil.

The West Nipissing East Sudbury Agricultural Support Projects Inc., in partnership with the West Nipissing Soil and Crop Improvement Association and 15 area farms are involved in the initiative.

Recent studies indicate that every dollar of farm income generates about $4 in spinoff benefits.
