The City of Sudbury has negotiated a conditional agreement with CP Rail to purchase land belonging to CP Rail and Via Rail in the city’s downtown.

Several conditions must be met, including an environmental assessment of soil conditions, before the sale will go through. Sudbury is eyeing the land for the city’s farmers’ market, and plans to have it ready for the new site by spring 2013.

“The City of Greater Sudbury remains committed to opening a downtown market for the 2013 season,” said Ian Wood, Sudbury’s economic development director, in a news release. “The conversion of industrial land to public use is a lengthy process that requires due diligence on the part of the municipality. We are optimistic that we can finalize the sale and relocate the market to the CP Rail station in time for opening next spring.”

 The farmers’ market is being relocated to make way for the Laurentian School of Architecture.
