The clerk for the City of Timmins has been named president of the provincial body governing municipal managers, clerks and treasurers.

Stephane Palmateer was sworn in as president of the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) during the closing ceremonies of the association's 78th annual conference and annual general meeting, held June 12-15 in Niagara Falls.

Palmateer has served in municipal government for 23 years and has served as Timmins’ clerk since August 2013. He previously served for more than 14 years as the chief administrative officer for the Town of Cobalt.

In his inaugural president’s speech, Palmateer noted that 30 per cent of local government professionals would be eligible to retire in the next two to five years, creating a “tremendous” challenge in succession planning.

He challenged association members to recruit and mentor the next generation of qualified municipal leaders to serve Ontario's communities and its young professionals to step into the pending leadership void and to become involved in the association, to ensure it continues to be the most respected municipal professional administrative association in Ontario.
