Timmins ventures receive funding

Timmins-area enterprises are the recipient of close to $1.8 million in funding from the federal government.

The Venture Centre will receive the largest amount, $1.6 million, for the Community Futures Program, which will provide business counselling and access to capital services, as well as support community strategic planning initiatives for a five-year period.

The centre serves Timmins, Gogama, Mattagami First Nation, Biscotasing, Shining Tree, and Foleyet.

The Downtown Timmins Business Improvement Area is receiving $31,500 to implement initiatives that will drive business to the downtown to stimulate business investment and growth. The funds will be used to hire a youth intern, who will help create and implement marketing strategies, develop new events to attract traffic to the downtown, and host training sessions for business members.

Other funding announced will go to the Timmins Public Library Board ($99,138) to add a new entrance onto the existing building, and the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority ($61,000) to make upgrades to the Gillies Lake Conservation Area, including lighting, signage, landscaping, and trail, boardwalk and parking lot upgrades.
