The City of Timmins has received $2.4 million in provincial funding to kickstart construction of a new 36-acre industrial park.

On March 31, the province announced it was providing $2,485,650 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. for the project.

The project includes water, road and hydro upgrades, as well as the construction of rail spurs to accommodate a new anchor tenant in the park.

Last October, Calabrian Corp., which is headquartered out of Texas, announced it was setting up a liquid sulphur dioxide (SO2) production plant in Timmins to serve the mining, paper, and water treatment sectors.

The City of Timmins and the Timmins Economic Development Corp. (TEDC) agreed to offset some of the development costs, while the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) agreed to provide rail access to the facility, a key logistical requirement for the company.

Timmins Mayor Steve Black commended the NOHFC for its support.

“The development of this industrial park is vital for our city and is already helping us attract new private-sector business to Timmins,” Black said in a release. “This project will help create good jobs for our local residents and increase municipal revenues.”

“We continue to work on economic and community development projects to improve the investment climate for businesses looking to establish their operations in Timmins,” added Fred Gibbons, chair of the Timmins EDC.

“We believe that this new industrial park will help attract important new investments to our region and generate significant economic spinoff benefits for the area.”

Work on the industrial park is expected to be complete by September.
