The City of Timmins will soon be host to a liquid sulfur dioxide plant.

Texas-based Calabrian Corp. is setting up a liquid sulfur dioxide plant in Timmins.

In a news release, the company said the facility would serve the mining, paper and water treatment markets. Site development and construction is to begin immediately, and production is expected to start in late 2016. The Timmins branch of Bestech Engineering is designing the Calabrian site.

“Following the shutdown of sulfur dioxide production in Sudbury and Kidd Creek in recent years, eastern Canada consumers of sulfur dioxide have experienced supply challenges,” Calabrian CEO Randy Owens said in the release. “We look forward to serving these markets by reducing transportation complexity and risk in a more economical way.”

According to the release, the new plant will use SO2Clean, Calabrian’s proprietary process, which the company calls emission-free, reliable and capital-efficient.

“We welcome this new partnership with Calabrian, which brings with it the addition of skilled manufacturing jobs to support Canada’s mining industry and aligns with the Northern Growth Plan,” Timmins Mayor Steve Black said in the release. “We look forward to the positive economic impact it will have in our community.”

Calabrian worked closely with the Timmins Economic Development Corp., the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission and the city to attract the company.

The facility will create 20 new positions.
