Cochrane is the recipient of $1.6 million in provincial funding to boost its tourism sector.

Of that money, $1 million will go toward the construction of a 3,500-square-foot special events pavilion along the north end of the Commando Lake waterfront. The pavilion will feature a number of new facilities, including permanent restrooms, change rooms, a stage, kitchen and utilities. This investment will create 10 local jobs during construction and once complete, the facility will be capable of hosting up to 2,000 people for festivals, concerts, the local farmers market and cultural events.

An additional investment of $687,250 will support enhancements to the Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat, including improved live streaming, perimeter fencing and bear-holding upgrades that will support conservation and education about Ontario's polar bear population.

Funding comes from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp.
