The Timmins Chamber of Commerce honoured some of its most dedicated advocates during its annual general meeting Sept. 17.

Mayor Tom Laughren was given an honorary lifetime membership. He served as chamber president in 2005-2006 before serving eight years as mayor of Timmins. He facilitated monthly meetings with the chamber president to discuss member concerns and formed the Northern Mayors Task Force in 2010.

“Tom has been one of the city’s most visible and passionate advocates for so long that any attempt to describe his dedication will surely be common knowledge,” Phil Barton, immediate past president, said in a news release. “He has endlessly demonstrated his talent for advancing the interests of the city while providing business the best possible opportunities to succeed.”

Bill McMillan of Porcupine Gold Mines and Wayne Bozzer of the Timmins Family YMCA were presented with service awards for each serving six years of service on the chamber’s board, the maximum time of consecutive service permitted on the board.

Bozzer was also named recipient of the Alex Klimack Award, which recognizes an outstanding volunteer for his commitment to the chamber and the community as a whole.

The reigns now go to Al Thorne of Tembec, who was officially sworn in as the new chamber president as part of the evening’s proceedings.
