Fraser Dougall, a Thunder Bay media owner and philanthropist, has died. He was 73.
Born in Port Arthur in 1942, Dougall was known in Northern Ontario as president of Dougall Media.
His father, Hector Dougall, started a local television and radio broadcast operation that Fraser inherited at his father’s passing. He became president of CKPR Radio and Television at 21.
By the early 1970s, he added a CTV affiliate to become Canada’s first “twin stick” broadcaster.
Dougall promoted and support community interests and local projects through his media assets, which grew to three radio stations, a weekly newspaper, a news website and other Internet properties.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Art’s Degree from the University of Manitoba and was selected as the Executive of the Year in 1996 by the Northern Ontario Business Awards.
A staunch supporter of local charities, he was the chair of the Lakehead University board of governors where is also a fellow, the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, the Ontario Economic Council, a member of the Port Arthur Rotary Club, and a member of the Salvation Army Citizens board.
A recipient of numerous awards and recognitions including the Rotary Club’s International Community Service Award, the Governor’s award, Rotarian of the Year, and the Paul Harris Fellowship. He also received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal and was named a member of the Order of Ontario in 2010.
