The Port of Thunder Bay registered more than eight-million tonnes of cargo during the current shipping season, a first since 2008.

The authority said Dec. 4 that it expects to approach the nine million mark by the time the season closes next month, which would set a 17-year high.

Above-average grain shipments again dominated the numbers in November, bringing the annual grain totals to more than 7.1 million. Grain totals are 57 per cent higher than last year as the port transitions from moving the 2013 Western Canada bumper grain crop to this year’s harvest.

The authority also posted a sharp increase in foreign vessels doing port calls this fall. For the first time in a decade, the number of “salties” in port surpassed 100 ships.
