Marine grain shipments through the Port of Thunder Bay remained strong through September.

The port authority reported more than 900,000 tonnes of Western Canada grain were loaded at elevators during the month, nearly 50 per cent more than during the same period last year.

Grain volumes at the end of September have surpassed the total volume recorded during last year’s shipping season. Three months remain before the Seaway closes for the winter.

Combined with coal, potash and dry bulk cargoes, the port moved more than one million tonnes during the month. That’s the fifth consecutive month the port has handled a million tonnes of cargo.

The Thunder Bay Port Authority said other cargoes were handled by its facilities, such as scrap, salt, and windmill blades. Keefer Terminal handled an inbound cargo of specialty wood pellets from Norway that were destined for the boiler at the recently converted Thunder Bay Generating Station.
